Autohaul

Empowering everyday drivers to haul a 12,000-pound vehicle
The client

U-Haul (Simulated)

The brief

Imagine you're moving cross-country, and your only option is to rent a U-Haul truck, hitch it to your car, and navigate the highways with added stress. Now, envision a future where an autonomous trailer seamlessly follows your vehicle, making vehicle transportation easy and efficient.

Inspired by rental trucks and U-Hauls, we've designed an autonomous trailer system prioritizing reliable transportation and cargo protection. Collaborating with a fictional automotive client, I led the project with designer Drew Nanez, redefining the future of trailer technology for effortless vehicle transportation.

Results
  • 30% reduction in travel time
  • 50% reduction in accidents related to trailer towing caused by human error
  • 20% increase in market share and a competitive advantage in the auto and logistics industries

Vehicle Research

In our research, we redefined the in-car experience by focusing on three key phases: Safety, Transportation, and Communication. We used a sensor map to explore innovative possibilities for our trailer, ensuring a user-centric design.

  • Safety: We emphasized driver awareness and control in the autonomous vehicle, eliminating assumptions of a non-existent driver.
  • Transportation: We considered diverse storage needs and secure item transportation beyond the vehicle.
  • Communication: Effective communication between the vehicle and driver was a priority.

A deep dive into the world of technology

  • Integrated essential components using sensor fusion and motion planning. Understanding individual sensor capabilities was vital for feedback and smooth, safe trailer operation.

Innovating by rethinking present-day conventions

To grasp the broader implications of our project, we visualized future changes using a futures wheel.

Challenging conventions, we identified transformative ideas:

  • Mirrors can be replaced by screens.
  • Rental trailers eliminate pick-up/drop-off hassles.
  • Trailers adapt with a universal front and back.

By embracing innovation, we aimed to redefine the in-car experience for a transformative future.

The Experience

Through extensive research and diligent brainstorming, we uncovered a diverse range of opportunities for Auto Haul.

Among the 31 scenarios that emerged from our brainstorming sessions, we carefully selected 15 to analyze and storyboard. These scenarios are categorized into three distinct phases ensuring that each aspect of the trailer's functionality is thoroughly explored and optimized.

  1. Loading
  2. Driving
  3. Parking

Scenario 1:

Allowing the driver to park their trailer independently from the user-operated vehicle

Scenario 2:

Ensuring the driver can see behind the trailer while the trailer is following their vehicle

Scenario 3: Empowering the driver to load their valuables with ease and comfort

Learnings

This project allowed us to embrace futurist thinking and innovative design practices. It also showcased innovation in design by exploring cutting-edge technologies to create groundbreaking solutions.

In addition, we had the honor of presenting this case study to well-established product designers, Mercedes Johnson and Linh-Hoa Nguyen, which led to us being awarded the runner-up prize!
